Founder & Owner
Most people start trip planning by picking a date. In Western Australia, it works the other way around: the place you want to go decides when you should go.
The state covers 2.64 million square kilometres, and that scale alone means there’s never one “perfect time” for all of it. After years of running 4WD rentals here, I can tell you a well-timed trip means lower costs and better weather, while a badly timed one lands you in 45-degree heat or staring at booked-out campsites. The breakdown below is built to keep you out of that second camp, region by region.
Perth and Surrounds (Year-Round)
Perth has Australia’s textbook Mediterranean climate, with clear seasonal shifts. It’s the most reliable place to base an itinerary, and Bureau of Meteorology data backs that up: whatever the month, Perth gives you a consistent baseline to plan logistics around, which makes it the natural launch pad for a 4WD camper hire Perth itinerary.
Summer (December to February)
Summer is dry heat and long days. Average maximums hit 31.6°C in February, usually the hottest month, but the “Fremantle Doctor” sea breeze rolls in most afternoons and takes the edge off. It’s good weather for coastal camping near Lancelin or catching the ferry to Rottnest Island.
Key Summer Considerations:
- Rainfall: extremely low (often less than 15mm combined for the season).
- Events: The Perth Festival typically kicks off in February.
- Gear: You rarely need more than a light sheet for sleeping.
Autumn (March to May)
Autumn is my pick for the most comfortable stretch in the capital. The ocean holds around 22°C well into April while air temperatures settle to a manageable 25°C average. Once university and school terms resume in early February the crowds thin right out, and you can often grab the better campsites at Lane Poole Reserve without a fight.
Winter (June to August)
Winter is wet, cool, and green. Perth takes the bulk of its annual rainfall (approx. 730mm) over these months. Daytime highs hover around 18°C, which makes hiking the Bibbulmun Track far safer than slogging it in summer heat. A 4WD earns its keep here, because unsealed roads in the Wheatbelt turn to slippery mud in a hurry.
Spring (September to November)
Temperatures climb back into the mid-20s through spring. The Kings Park Festival in September is the highlight, putting thousands of native plant species on show, and the first wildflowers start appearing in the Perth Hills, which is when the cameras come out.

Coral Coast, Cervantes to Exmouth (April to October)
The Coral Coast is semi-arid, and getting the timing right matters more here than almost anywhere else. I’d steer you well clear of peak summer for safety reasons. Department of Fire and Emergency Services data shows cyclone frequency peaks between January and March.
Peak Season (April to October)
This six-month window is when the Coral Coast delivers the conditions WA is known for. Daily maximums settle between 25°C and 30°C, nights are cool enough to sleep comfortably, and the southerly winds ease off. The wildlife calendar sets the agenda here more than the weather does:
- Whale Sharks: Best reliability is mid-March to July (tours run from Exmouth and Coral Bay).
- Humpback Whales: Migration peaks from July to October.
- Manta Rays: Year-round residents at Coral Bay, but conditions are calmest in Autumn.
- Wildflowers: Inland areas like Coalseam Conservation Park bloom July to September.
Off-Season (November to March)
Heat is the thing that stops you in these months. Ground temperatures can push past 50°C and air temps regularly top 40°C. Plenty of station stays and remote roadhouses cut their hours back or shut entirely.
Why we warn against summer travel here:
- Cyclone Risk: Roads like the North West Coastal Highway often close due to flooding.
- Flies: The population of bush flies explodes in the heat.
- Closures: National Park gorges may close if heat stress risks are too high.
Crowds and Pricing Realities
Demand for the Coral Coast goes through the roof over the April and July school holidays. Campsites at Cape Range National Park (Osprey Bay in particular) open 180 days out via the Park Stay WA website, and for peak dates they can sell out within minutes of release. The move is to target May or August: you miss the school rush but keep the good weather.
South West, Busselton to Pemberton (September to May)
The South West is the wettest and mildest part of the state, and the obvious choice if you’re here for food, wine, and tall forests. Towns like Pemberton average over 1,100mm of rain a year, most of it falling in winter.
Spring (September to November)
After the winter rain the landscape greens right up. It’s a good window for hiking parts of the Cape to Cape Track, with temperatures in the high teens to low 20s so you’re not cooking on the trail. Orchid hunters head to the Stirling Ranges around now to find endemic species you won’t see anywhere else.
Summer (December to February)
Summer is the classic beach holiday season down here. The Leeuwin Current keeps water temps near 22°C, so swimming is genuinely pleasant, and daylight stretches until nearly 8:00 PM, which gives you long days to fill.
The Trade-off:
- Pricing: Accommodation rates can jump 30-50% during the December/January break.
- Traffic: The drive from Perth to Margaret River can take four hours instead of three due to congestion.
Autumn (March to May)
Autumn is the insider’s pick for the Margaret River region. The grape harvest (vintage) is on, usually wrapping up by late April, and the whole area has a good buzz about it. Winds tend to be lighter than spring, so afternoon beach walks are more pleasant, and competition for campsites at Conto Campground or Boranup Forest falls away after Easter.
Winter (June to August)
Expect heavy rain and cold nights in winter. Our vehicles run dual batteries and efficient fridges, so you stay comfortable inside no matter what’s coming down outside. The payoff is the waterfalls at full volume and roaring fires at the local wineries. Whale watching shifts to Augusta and Albany now as the pods track along the coast.

Esperance and the South Coast (October to April)
Esperance sits on the edge of the Great Australian Bight, and the weather here turns on a dime. I tell every renter heading down to pack a windproof jacket even in summer. The wind is notorious, but the coastline more than pays you back for putting up with it.
Peak Season (October to April)
This is the only stretch with reliable beach weather down here. February and March usually serve up the clearest water at Lucky Bay and Hellfire Bay. Temperatures run from 20°C to 30°C, though a sudden wind shift can knock 10 degrees off that within the hour.
Booking Alert: Lucky Bay Campground is arguably the most popular campsite in WA. You must book 180 days out via Park Stay WA if you want a spot between December and April.
Off-Season (May to September)
Winter turns properly cold and blustery, with daytime highs struggling to reach 16°C. The trade-off is that Cape Le Grand National Park stays open and goes almost empty. With a diesel heater and decent wet weather gear, you can have those white sands entirely to yourself.
Wildflower Season (July to November)
This is the biggest wildflower show on Earth. The blooms kick off in the Pilbara around June/July and roll south like a slow wave over the following months. There are over 12,000 species, and 60% of them grow nowhere else on the planet.
Key Locations and Timing
You need to be in the right latitude at the right time.
- Mid-West (Geraldton/Mullewa): late July to early September.
- Wheatbelt (Wave Rock): August to mid-October.
- South West (Margaret River): October to November.
Pro Tip: Use the WA Visitor Centre Wildflower Tracker online before you drive. This tool relies on recent sightings rather than historical averages, giving you real-time data on where the blooms are popping.
A 4WD camper pays off here, because many of the best displays, like those at Coalseam Conservation Park, sit at the end of unsealed gravel roads.
School Holiday Pricing and Availability
School terms drive availability more than the weather does. During WA school holidays the calendar empties out fast. Plan around these approximate 2026/2027 windows to save money and dodge the crowds.
The Major Blocks to Watch
| Holiday Period | Impact Level | Regional Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Mid-Dec to Late Jan) | Extreme | Entire State (Peak Pricing) |
| Easter / Term 1 Break (April) | High | Coral Coast & South West |
| Winter / Term 2 Break (July) | High | Coral Coast (Exmouth) |
| Spring / Term 3 Break (Sept/Oct) | Moderate | South West & Esperance |
Strategic Advice: Travel in the “shoulder” weeks immediately following a school term. For example, the first two weeks of February or the last two weeks of October offer near-peak weather with off-peak pricing.

Quick Reference: Best Months by Region
| Region | Ideal Window | Cautionary Window |
|---|---|---|
| Perth & Surrounds | September to May | June to August (Rain) |
| Coral Coast (Exmouth) | April to September | November to March (Cyclones/Heat) |
| South West (Margaret River) | February to May | June to August (Wet/Cold) |
| Esperance | January to April | May to September (Cold Winds) |
| Wildflowers | August to October | None |
The Bottom Line
If you’re stitching multiple regions into one trip, two “golden windows” stand out. April to May is the one for beach lovers and snorkellers heading north. September to October is the clear winner for wildflower chasers and hikers heading south. Both dodge the biting flies of summer and the heavy rains of winter.
WA is big enough that there’s always good weather somewhere. We keep the campers ready for whatever the conditions throw at you, so you can put your attention on the drive. Check the dates above, book your campsites early, and get on the road.
